No app left behind: Upgrade your application to Ruby 3.0 and stay on the upgrade path!

By Glen Crawford,

development Ruby 3.0 RubyonRails Upgrades

One of the best things about being a Ruby developer is that every year, without fail, we get a Christmas present in the form of a new release of the Ruby programming language on December the 25th. And this Christmas was no different, with Ruby 3.0.0 being released on Christmas Day 2020!

Ruby 3 is a big release and has been in the works for a long time, and there are by now already a million blog posts about its contents, so I don't intend to spend time here analysing the new features and fixes. I want to relay our early experiences with the upgrade, and reiterate why you shouldn't put it off.

A look forward from 2020

While these are certainly more fun to develop than a (let's be honest) vanilla Rails app, they can offer challenges, such as how to test them effectively.

There are plenty of ways to do so; many browsers nowadays offer a way to simulate different screen sizes, device orientations, and pixel ratios, such as Responsive Design Mode in Firefox. You can also use emulators, VMs, and services like BrowserStack. You have lots of options to simulate, but I want to briefly outline how to use real devices to test your apps running on your local Rails server. The benefits of this approach are:

What is Technical Debt?

By Gavin Terpstra,

2020 development management rails RubyonRails technical debt

First, what is technical debt and why is addressing it important?

Technical debt is a concept in software development that reflects the implied cost of additional rework caused by choosing a limited, often 'easy' solution over a more durable and complex approach that would take longer or have higher development costs.
